NHS Medical & Dental: Trust Grade Registrar
Job overview
NUH is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and highly motivated Trust Grade doctor at ST3 level or above to support one of the largest General Surgery departments in the UK. The post is for 12 months initially from August 2023. The post holder may rotate between specialties after 6 months if their preferences and service requirements allow. Preferences will be discussed at interview.
The post holder will contribute to an on-call rota and should therefore have completed core surgical training (or equivalent), have full MRCS, ALS and have experience working within the NHS.
Main duties of the job
This is an exciting opportunity to get excellent experience in general surgery and sub-specialty elective services. You will work closely with consultants, other junior doctors and multi-disciplinary teams. The post holder will be part of an on call general surgery rota on either QMC or City Hospital campuses. The allocation of on call duties will also be rotational.
The post holder may wish to focus part of their time on quality improvement projects with a dedicated supervisor or participate in the research programme of the Service they are placed with. Dedicated time will be allocated to these activities and appropriate academic supervision will be arranged where applicable. Subject to satisfactory progress, this could lead to the development of a proposal for a Masters by Research from the University of Nottingham or development of a proposal for a PhD at the University of Nottingham.
These posts may also be used for targeted clinical training, e.g. endoscopy (colonoscopy or EUS) for those who have already started training in endoscopy and are registered on JAG. The latter may be suitable for Out of Programme experience, if appropriate training programme approvals are confirmed. Timetables would be adjusted to ensure dedicated training sessions in the relevant area of interest.
Working for our organisation
Our services are provided across two main campuses (Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital) and deliver separate sub-specialist emergency care for Colorectal, UGI and HPB conditions, alongside general surgery. Our elective care is also delivered across both sites and we have recently opened a brand new theatre complex and elective inpatient ward at City campus.
Although this is not a training post it should be possible for an enthusiastic doctor to map their experiences to many of the core curriculum programme competences as all aspects of the syllabus are relevant to this attachment.
We encourage our doctors to involve themselves in audit and research. You would be expected to make yourself familiar with the processes of the audit cycle and to assess the role of audit in clinical governance and in improving patient care. Supervision for projects will be available, and support may also be available from hospital audit departments.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will support various aspects of this busy service, with a commitment to an out of hours rota. The daytime role will be affiliated to one of our elective services. The post holder will attend clinics, theatre sessions and ward rounds as per allocation in a weekly firm timetable.
