Job overview

We are looking to recruit a full-time Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join the Medicine & Surgery OT team based at QMC either permanently or on a 2 year, fixed-term contract or secondment. The role is predominantly clinical but also involves some service development.

The successful candidate will:

Have excellent clinical skills across a wide range of areas that enable them to assess, treat and deliver rehabilitation to patients with a variety of different clinical presentations,

Have a proven track-record of managing complex discharges whilst taking steps to mitigate and manage risk.

Be committed to delivering person-centred care whilst simultaneously optimising patient flow in the acute setting.

Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with other team members to deliver high quality patient care and outcomes.

Be able to identify and address the development needs of less experienced and more junior colleagues.

Have experience of successful collaboration with other services and agencies across the Integrated Care System.

Demonstrate emotional intelligence and compassion in relation to patients, carers and colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Provide high quality assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to patients with a variety of different presentations.

Manage complex discharges and support other team members to do the same.

Optimise patient flow.

Provide effective supervision to Band 5 OTs and support staff.

Deputise for Band 7 OTs as appropriate.

Work flexibly - including working rostered weekends.

Work alongside other members of the team to develop the service in line with evidence based practice.

Support student placements within the team.

Support the learning and development of other team members by providing formal and informal training and mentoring.

Work effectively as part of multi-disciplinary teams across all relevant wards and areas

The Medicine & Surgery OT team is committed to delivering high quality person-centred assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to our patients whilst optimising patient flow within the acute setting. Therapies and Rehabilitation Services is one of the directorates that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over700 staff who work together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to.

Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists, and our other staff encompass professionals such as nurses, psychologists, administrative and clerical and support workers.

We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

The successful applicant will demonstrate advanced level occupational therapy skills in assessment and diverse interventions.

A willingness to learn and develop further, both clinically and professionally and to lead on this within the team is essential. The successful applicant must be open minded to new ways of working and lead on this. The ideal individual for this role needs to be flexible, dynamic and forward thinking. Strong leadership qualities are essential in this post.

You will be working as part of large inter and multi-professional teams who will give support and training for you to develop in this role to reach your full potential. Also, to advocate strongly for the OT role in the MDT setting. You will demonstrate an ability to work autonomously to an advanced level and provide support to other members of the team, including peers, Band 5 OT’s, including preceptees, support workers and students. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work flexibly to support the needs of the service.

Essential criteria

  • Diploma or degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Health Professional Council registration as an Occupational Therapist
  • Able to maintain a professional portfolio for CPD, recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of delegating to and supervising OT or Rehabilitation support staff
  • Experience of contributing to the clinical education of less experienced staff or undergraduate OT students
  • Knowledge of national and local standards and COT guidelines
  • Experience of contributing to service development
  • Experience of using evidence based practice in own practice
  • Experience of involvement in change management
  • Experience of being an appraisee and appraisor, using personal development review
  • Experience of delegation and contributing to the operational management of the team

Communication skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills
  • Able to effectively use a range of written and verbal communication skills with patients to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating eg. Patients may be dysphasic, deaf, who may be unable to accept diagnosis or have terminal illness
  • Able to communicate patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors.
  • Able to maintain accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Trust standards, departmental standards and COT Standards of Practice

Analytical/Judgement skills

  • Able to reflect and critically appraise own performance and the performance of junior OT staff and support staff
  • Risk assessment skills for the safe management and discharge of complex patients
  • Independently work through the OT process with complex patients
  • Able to use evidenced based practice to inform own practice and that of others

  • Able to plan own clinical activity to meet clinical needs of patients when demand exceeds capacity
  • Able to make judgements about the prioritizing of caseloads when demand exceeds capacity and to support junior and support staff in this process

Physical skills

Essential criteria

  • Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes rehabilitation
  • Keyboard skills

Essential criteria
