The SDA has exciting career opportunities for eager and motivated Mechanical Systems Engineers to join our team. In joining us, you will integrate with highly skilled professionals to support some of largest and most complex engineering programmes in the world. You will work at the forefront of marine technology to oversee engineering challenges unique to this industry, whilst contributing to project success and providing support to the Royal Navy.

As an integrated Mechanical Systems Engineer and an SDA representative, you’ll have the opportunity to lead on the development of requirements within your role. You’ll be a delegated authority on complex capabilities relating to submarine build and will operate at senior level, engaging with delivery projects across wider SDA teams to provide specialist systems engineering insight to in-build Astute Class Submarines. You will lead on key deliverables and interface as intelligent customer to our prime contractor, BAE Systems, ensuring that design, performance and integration of platform systems into the submarine meet contractual requirements.

Due to the nature of this work, working with project teams and suppliers is critical to success. You will therefore be required to uphold strong and productive relationships and provide subject matter expert advice to SDA teams and our contractors. Occasional travel between sites may be required. However, your primary place of work could be either of the following two locations:

  • MOD Abbey Wood, Filton, Bristol BS34 8JH
  • BAE Systems, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria LA14 1AF

Please be advised that due to the nature of security, these roles are reserved for sole UK Nationals only. Due to there being posts in two locations, SDA reserve the right to offer the highest scoring applicants for each location respectively, subject to requirements.

This post may be eligible for the NSQEP Recruitment Retention Allowance of up to £4,000 per annum. This allowance is discretionary and will be dependent on a candidate's ability to successfully demonstrate the necessary competency, qualifications, and experience to an independent panel of Subject Matter Experts.

External and internal candidates may be entitled to relocation expenses for this position. This will depend on the outcome of an eligibility check by Defence Business Services (DBS).

About the role

By joining the SDA, you will have defined progression routes and opportunities to learn and develop as a professional. To begin with you will have the opportunity to:

  • Manage the delivery of all engineering aspects in area of responsibility as defined in the assignment specification or objectives including managing the acquisition safety aspects.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance in own technical area to solve complex technical problems and identify application risks.
  • Manage the technical requirements for the acquisition lifecycle stage of one or more project, programme, service or system.
  • Monitor and implement any governance and assurance policies and procedures to ensure the ‘safe & professional’ status of the area led.
  • Lead on the development of requirements related to own area of specialism including acceptance plans, performance criteria and draft specifications.
  • Interface with industry as the intelligent customer both in a scrutiny role and supporting the identification of application risks
  • Likely to hold Safety Responsibilities (SR)

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Relevant Level 4 (or higher) qualification or equivalent experience
  • Experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes.
  • Wide ranging depth and breadth of technical experience in own specialism with knowledge and application of Mechanical Systems Engineering approaches.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competencies and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
