Job description

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer your design, build, manage and support the infrastructure services that underpin all internal user services and services to the public. As a IXD Senior Infrastructure Engineer you will be working within the MIX Svc Exec which is responsible for the creation, and sustainment of a broad range of national, FVEY (5-eyes), and NATO intelligence information services for Defence Intelligence (DI) and single Services Intelligence communities at all classifications. The team consists of a number of programme areas (IXD, IMAGE, MEDIS and C4ISR) but this role will be supporting Intelligence Exploitation & Dissemination (IXD).


IXD is responsible for the acquisition and support of a range of capabilities which enable effective and efficient direction, collation, processing and dissemination of intelligence, nationally and collaboratively. This ranges from Open-Source Intelligence, through supply of processing and analytical tools, to the supply of the maritime picture and near real-time threat warnings.

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer you will be overseeing the implementation of a wide range of technical solutions for our Armed Forces. You will be working closely with Enterprise/Solution Architects and Delivery Management teams to ensure that our services are effectively delivered to our end users satisfaction.

This position combines technical skills covering all aspects of IT, including implementation, migration and troubleshooting skills for all aspects of any given solutions such as server infrastructure, network infrastructure, cloud and communications platforms etc.
These roles will work within the IXD Engineering Team which consists of a number of Infrastructure Engineers, DevOps Software Engineers, Test/Data Engineers and a number of Industry Security Assurance Coordinators.

We have an opportunity for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join our IXD Engineering team which is based at MOD Abbey Wood, Bristol but there is opportunity to also be based at our other core site MOD Corsham and with Hybrid working opportunities. You will take responsibility for supporting the service delivery of IT Intelligence systems whilst ensuring that relevant Defence stakeholders are kept informed of progress and in particular are told of major problems and/or issues in a timely manner. IXD Services are delivered using AGILE and Waterfall methodologies. You will be pro-active in suggesting and proposing new technologies to support the development of engineering solutions whilst identifying on-going improvements to existing systems.

Person specification

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will be able to demonstrate a deep knowledge of IT infrastructure and understanding with experience of setting strategy, applying standards, working within regulatory constraints, processes, procedures and tools and communicating their intent.

You will support the lead engineer in the delivery of the IT engineering aspects of any single significant delivery area and demonstrate the necessary experience to undertake the following typical key responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage and integrate multi-disciplined engineering teams; directing engineering resources to deliver packages of work or services to quality, time and cost.
  • Reviewing and providing IT engineering advice on the delivery of infrastructure to support each project ensuring useable capability is available for front line forces.
  • Supporting the development of the test and evaluation strategy for the projects
  • Providing technical leadership to solve complex problems with innovative solutions that enhance capability
  • Working closely with industry partners, both nationally and internationally
  • Ensure technical risks and opportunities are captured and actively managed
  • Develop or oversee the industry development of solutions, developing design documentation (high and low level)
  • Clear and effective Stakeholder engagement management and all levels with customers and suppliers on behalf of Defence Digital.
  • Oversight and sign off of the installation and commissioning of IT services.
  • Support in-service incident management and oversee problem resolution.

Qualifications

Minimum of ONC/BTEC (level 4) in Systems Engineering / Computer Science or Similar qualifications in related discipline and experience in an IT Systems Engineering role.
