About the role

Climate Group is looking to significantly boost our capability to influence and shape climate policies across the world. We are looking for someone experienced in forming effective relationships with governments and policymakers and building influential policy positions to spearhead this work. This will include:

  • Systematically build Climate Groups external relationships the role will lead on policy and advocacy for the organisation, through their own activity and encouraging/coordinating with colleagues across teams. The aim is to grow the influence of both our systems work (e.g., campaigns on energy, transport) and additional government and policy agendas (e.g., climate finance, adaptation).
  • Develop and steer our policy and advocacy focus, projects, and initiatives with, and towards, governments and international and multilateral organisations, focusing on the opportunities and policy changes most likely to accelerate climate action.
  • Establish and build Climate Groups policy positioning driving bold policy positioning that both leads agendas and engages with the topical issues of the day. Developing our suite of positions through building on existing knowledge, expertise and collaboratively developing new positions where there is the need to lead
  • Lead tactical thinking on how to best influence bringing innovative campaigning, advocacy and engagement techniques to help achieve our goals, balancing the need for constructive engagement with governments, while also taking a solutions-focused approach to tackling barriers to change,

Direct Responsibilities


The Head of Policy and Advocacy is one of the four lead managers in the Governments and Policy team and will also work closely with our Systems and Communications teams. This role is responsible for growing our collective influencing expertise as an organisation. The key responsibilities of the role are:


  • Policy and advocacy strategy development and implementation through building impactful relationships particularly with government/multilateral stakeholders, key project partners and funders.
  • Coordinating and leading policy development, dissemination, and oversight across the organisation.
  • Influencing expertise as a source of senior support to cross-cutting campaigns on policy and advocacy and contributing to specific systems focused campaigns.
  • Driving external focus and engagement to build the quality relationships Climate Group needs to influence and change policy, through engagement with policymakers, advisors etc and working with colleagues to achieve this.
  • Maintaining and leading the approach to our engagement with the intergovernmental advocacy calendar (e.g., UNGA, COP, CEM, G7/G20 etc).
  • Leading senior advocacy work for our key global moments e.g., supporting the Climate Week NYC and COP teams to secure high profile speakers for our platforms and maximising the engagement opportunities.
  • Overseeing the delivery of major policy focused projects (these currently include the Under2 Methane project and Finance Fit for Change).
  • Team leadership in driving the Policy and Advocacys team agenda, vision and supporting team members, and playing a wider organisational role to achieve that.
  • Policy knowledge production and learning through working with colleagues to ensure that our policy work is effectively disseminated, and our Under2 Coalition and wider government partners are informed and able to identify levers for scale-up and replication.
  • Building out a pipeline of new projects based on opportunities for greatest impact, working with development colleagues to ensure secure income streams to develop the work of the team.


About you

Essential:


  • Understanding of, and a commitment to, the mission of Climate Group.
  • Demonstrable experience of building major policy, advocacy and/or public affairs engagement programmes both personally building relationships and encouraging colleagues to grow external relations.
  • Substantial experience of advocacy and/or policy campaigns with governments (subnational, national or international/multilateral) on climate related issues.
  • Experience and understanding of the international climate policy environment and opportunities to platform differing levels of government to advance climate goals
  • Understanding and experience of policy learning, including how knowledge-sharing and policy learning can accelerate policy action.
  • Experience in developing policy project proposals for philanthropic funders and other donors
  • Experience in team management and ability to lead, motivate and support the development of team members.
  • Persuasive communication skills, including excellent writing skills and an ability to easily synthesise and present findings and ideas to a non-technical audience. Experience with public speaking and track record of publications (whether internal or for external audiences).
  • Excellent diplomacy skills with proven ability to work collaboratively with government stakeholders, external partners, contractors, and funders.

  • Strong skills in project delivery and oversight with excellent attention to detail and experience in budget management.

  • Experience of working with subnational governments.
  • Experience of working in a global environment and relevant language skills.
  • Experience of working with business as key agents of change and policy influencing.

Youll be based in our London head office near Tower Bridge (SE1 2NQ), a 12-minute walk from London Bridge station and enjoy the benefits of flexible and hybrid working: 3 days in the office and 2 days from home.

This is a full-time position. The salary offered is £49,200 - £55,349 per annum, based on experience.
