The Opportunity

DC Thomson’s magazine brands are undergoing a period of transformation, adopting new ways of working across a new department-wide structure. As part of this transformation, DC Thomson is looking for a Features Editor to play an important role in the magazines team driving the evolution of our brands.

Reporting into the Head of Features & Specials, the Features Editor will work closely with the wider magazines leadership team to implement the new operating structure for all magazine brands. Leading a team of Features Journalists and a Features Specialist, the Features Editor will drive content strategies and oversee their implementation processes.

They will ensure overall tone and brand guidelines are adhered to and that a cohesive vision exists across the team, acting as a key element of quality editorial control across publishing outputs.

What will you be doing as Features Editor?

  • Working closely with Editorial Directors and Head of Features & Specials to devise innovative long-term strategies for the future editorial direction of our magazine brands, plus additional printed products and growth projects.
  • Actively developing and maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of the relevant subject(s) aligned to the reader needs and trends.
  • Creating and overseeing content that is vibrant, imaginative and fit for purpose while conforming to the highest editorial standards and deadlines set.
  • Working across several of our key pillars including fashion & beauty, health & fitness, travel, celebrity and general features.
  • Overseeing the content creation process from writing through editing and publishing.
  • Working as part of an editorial team that can respond to business as usual needs, showing a flexibility to take on projects as requested by the Head of Features & Specials.
  • Connecting with external partners, freelancers or agencies as and when required, ensuring expectations and briefs are communicated clearly.
  • Contributing content to social media channels, maximising the use of Facebook, Twitter etc. to drive traffic to the sites and build engaged digital communities.
  • Managing the day-to-day operation of the Features Journalists team to meet brand owner expectations.
  • Leading regular feature meetings where the Features & Specials team generates new ideas and topics for articles ensuring a continual flow of relevant ideas for action.
  • Working with Digital Content Editors ensuring shared knowledge of online requirements and identifying training needs.
  • Understanding asset libraries and archiving practices that enable content reuse and repurposing within existing brands and that can facilitate new products.

What we are looking for

  • Proven track record of editorial experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Experience of managing, leading and motivating a team is preferable.
  • Creative and innovative approach to content.
  • Resilient, self-motivated, resourceful.
  • SEO and social media experience.
  • An ability to interpret instructions, prioritise tasks and work to strict deadlines and style guides.
  • In depth knowledge of competitors and market trends.
  • An understanding of media law and industry ethical guidelines.

This is a full-time, permanent position, working 35 hours per week from our Dundee or Glasgow Offices. The role presents the opportunity for hybrid working that must include regular office attendance.
