An opportunity has arisen to join Suffolk County Council's Asset Management Team as an Asset Support Technician primarily focussing on the Highway drainage asset with some work to support management of the soft estate (i.e. grass verges, trees, and other vegetation) when we have significant workload pressures..
You will be based at our Phoenix House office in Ipswich, with site visits across the county as required. The role offers hybrid working options including some working from home.
Your role and responsibilities
You will:
- assist the Asset Manager and Asset Validation Engineer in the prioritisation, management and commissioning of highways drainage works to resolve flooding and drainage problems to help keep the highway network in a reasonably safe condition for public use or prevent flooding of homes or properties
- providing a responsive service for public enquiries relating to these activities
- investigate reports of flooding and drainage problems to prioritise repairs and improvement works
- support the Asset Manager to respond to formal complaints, Freedom of Information requests and enquiries from County Councillors, MPs, or Senior Managers
- assist in the production of briefs and commissioning documents.
You will need:
- HND/HNC in relevant highways (or civil) engineering discipline or equivalent level of knowledge and experience
- knowledge of drainage and soft estate maintenance and standards
- knowledge of safety standards for a variety of road works with some experience of working on live carriageways
- good planning and organisational skills
- an enthusiasm for investigating and solving problems
- excellent communication skills with an ability to build strong working and contractual relationships and interact clearly and effectively.

The team
- we are a relatively small team of 3 Technicians, an Engineer and the Asset Manager, we all work together and are very supportive.
We will offer you the:
- opportunity to work closely with many other teams not only within highways but more widely across Suffolk County Council for example Flood and Water Management Team, Ecology and Development Management. So the job is different every day, and offers great opportunity to expand your work network and understanding of work done by other directorates
- chance for you to progress within the field of Asset Management in relation to Highway Maintenance. Full training will be provided and development within the role is actively encouraged.
